This xBox was brought to us after a fail mod on the DVD drive. The drive would show open tray regardless of the type of disk inserted. I have listed this on our blog as it was a tricky repair, most of the time we just see failed lasers on these. The laser was lighting up, the disk was spinning but it just wouldnt read disks. After a few hours of work we spotted that it looked like the drive had been messed with and when asked we were advised it was a flash gone wrong so started looking for more unusual faults. The drive was showing signs of life so we knew the firmware was in tact and after a while noted that R55 shown in the middle of this picture had gone open circuit. This resistor is in line with the data channel and hence the disk data wasnt reaching the processor. We replaced this resistor, backed up the security infor on the drive and reflashed the original firmware. It go's to show sometimes its just not worth messing with your gadgets!
